New towing vehicle – Hyundai Santa FE

Why we decided to purchase another vehicle

The Mitsubishi Outlander proved to be a dependable vehicle during our journey from Melbourne to Uluru, even in extreme temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius. It effortlessly towed the caravan without any noticeable difficulties, except for the weight distribution hitch requiring frequent adjustments despite the load remaining constant.

Initially, we believed that we were at fault for the issue. However, after conducting some research and seeking advice from more knowledgeable individuals, we discovered that the problem was due to the Outlander being a soft-roader. It appeared to be a common occurrence for the rear suspension to sag when the ball weight reached its capacity of 200kg, despite our caravan’s weight being 180kg.

Unfortunately, our car did not offer any air bag options to alleviate this issue. Our only alternatives were to either downsize our caravan or consider changing our vehicle.

Why we purchase Hyundai Santa FE

Hyundai enhanced the engine, gearbox, and increased the tow capacity of the Santa Fe to 2.5 Tonnes in 2021. This development was welcomed by us as it eliminated the need for a costly upgrade to our towing vehicle.

Although there were alternative options boasting a towing capacity of 3.5 Tonnes, the Santa Fe’s GCM and payload limitations were more favorable for our needs. This allowed us to accommodate all passengers comfortably in the vehicle while towing the caravan, a feat that was not easily achievable with some other 4×4 manufacturers.

Things to keep in mind when purchasing a tow vehicle.

It is imperative to consider several important inquiries:

What is the total payload you will be required to transport?

This encompasses the combined weight of all passengers, any additional accessories installed in the vehicle, the weight of the tow bar, hitch, weight distribution kit, and the caravan tow ball weight.

Will you be with in the GVM limits?

The Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)  is the maximum weight capacity of a vehicle when it is being driven on the road. You will need to add the payload mentioned above to the kerb weight of your to work out the numbers.

Are the GCM limits of your car adequate?

The Gross Combination Mass (GCM) refers to the combined weight of the vehicle, any payload, and the towed weight. It is important to note that a lot of vehicles cannot be fully loaded to their Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and tow their maximum rated weight simultaneously, as this would exceed the GCM limit to different extents.

Things added to vehicle at the time of purchase to prepare for towing

  • Hyundai tow bar rated at 2.5T and ball weight of 220
  • Hyundai load assist kit heavy duty springs to increase the tow ball download capacity to 220kg
